Welcome to the Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health (CMNH).

Professor Nynke van den Broek

Progress has been made with regard to increasing the coverage of maternal and newborn health interventions over the past two decades and there is increasing recognition that further improvement in maternal and newborn health outcomes will depend on the ability to address inequity in availability of care as well as to improve the quality of that care. Improving the quality of facility-based healthcare services and making quality an integral component of scaling-up of interventions that are known to be effective will require a renewed global focus.

The CMNH counts on a multidisciplinary team of experts both in the UK and in countries we operate, and supports research programmes across Asia and Africa with a diverse funding mix. Our team members have a sound background in maternal, newborn and child health, and supported by strong programme management, are committed to helping achieve CMNH’s strategic aim: to improve the availability and quality of health care for mothers and babies.

We are able to do this by:

  • Partnering strategically with governments, global agencies, professional associations and the private sector.
  • Designing and implementing innovative, evidence based health care packages and new  frameworks for evaluation of effectiveness
  • Ensuring lessons learned  are shared across national boundaries to inform policy and practice

I do hope that you enjoy finding out more about who we are and how our work supports the global effort to improve the lives of mothers and their babies.
